Goal
The goal of the workshop is to provide a comprehensive approach to the issue of health disparities, and to provide attendees with a broad base of knowledge so that they may address health disparities with a bio-psychosocial approach.
Educational Objectives
After attending the conference, participants should be able to:
- Describe the complex social, behavioral and medical determinants of populations’ health, which will enable them to understand the origins of health disparities within a population
- Evaluate and analyze programs and policies to reduce and eliminate those disparities
- Examine the latest findings of specific research that demonstrate that there are wide disparities in health among certain populations
- Demonstrate awareness of factors that currently contribute to wide disparities in health among certain populations
- Identify the role of various health professionals in eliminating disparities
- Investigate community and state-level resources that can be mobilized for planning, policy development, program interpretation and funding for reduction of health disparities
- Develop a global vision of inequalities in health and medical care
Target Audience
This program should be of interest to physicians, nurses, social workers, health educators and other healthcare professionals, as well as active members of the community and community organizations. This conference should be of value to undergraduate and graduate students, as well as pre- and postdoctoral fellows.

Evaluation
A course evaluation form will provide participants with the opportunity to review each session and speaker, to identify future educational needs and to comment on any perceived commercial bias in the presentations.

Accreditation/Credit Designation
This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education through the joint sponsorship of The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center and Health Disparities Education, Awareness, Research and Training Consortium (HDEART), and NCMHD/NIH Centers of Excellence in Partnerships for Community Outreach Research on Health Disparities and Training (Project EXPORT). The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

Application has been made to the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing, Inc., to offer Category I continuing education contact hours (CECH) for this event. Approval is pending.
Nursing
Important Information for Nurses
Nursing Continuing Education Type One contact hours will not be provided for this program. Nurses are encouraged to contact their State Board of Nursing to see if attendance at this program would apply to other types of credit toward nursing relicensure such as Type Two credit in the state of Texas.

The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center Department of Social Work is an approved provider of Continuing Education Units (CEUs) by the Texas Board of Social Work Examiners.
