Brief Description: The goal of this study is to learn if using a non-invasive therapy called "neurofeedback training" can help teach patients ways to modify their own brain waves to decrease the perception of pain and improve quality of life.

Breast Cancer

Population: Mexican-American breast cancer survivors living in Harris County or one of the contiguous counties
Brief Description: The goal of this research study is to test an exercise program that is designed for Hispanic breast cancer survivors. Researchers want to learn the most effective strategies for promoting exercise. If you are found to be eligible to take part in this study, you will come in for 2 visits to complete fitness testing and questionnaires at the Behavioral Research Treatment Center (BRTC) at MD Anderson. The visits should last about 2 hours and 30 minutes. You will be asked to exercise about 3-5 times every week for 16 weeks at home for at least 30minutes. You will also be invited to group sessions every month. You should attend at least 2 of these sessions. A family member is invited to attend the group sessions with you. Six (6) months after the follow-up visit, you will complete follow-up questionnaires.
Stress Management

Population: Women with breast cancer undergoing radiation therapy (MDACC patients only)
Brief Description: The goal of this behavioral research study is to compare two different forms of stress management, that will include stretching and relaxation techniques, in order to learn if and how well they may help to improve physical and emotional well-being. This will be tested in patients with breast cancer who are receiving radiation therapy. For comparison purposes, there will also be a group of participants that does not take part in the stress management programs.

Head & Neck Cancer
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) Now

Population: Cancer patients who are smokers (MD Anderson patients only)
Brief Description: Randomized pilot study that targets smoking cessation (quit smoking) in head and neck cancer patients who continue to smoke following diagnosis. We will be examining the effects of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) compared to the administration of the Tobacco Treatment Program motivational and behavioral counseling.
Modeling Adherence - Dental and Swallowing Regimens

Population: for non-surgical laryngeal and pharyngeal cancers (oropharynx, hypopharynx, nasopharynx) cancer patients (MD Anderson patients only- MD Anderson satellite clinic patients are eligible)
Brief Description: Study will follow head and neck cancer patients as they proceed through treatment to determine biological and psychological reasons for difficulties in coping with treatment regimens and track health outcomes in the two years after treatment.

Population: Oropharynx cancer patients (MD Anderson patients only- MD Anderson satellite clinic patients are eligible)
Brief Description: This study will test the effects of an intervention program to increase oropharyngeal patients' ability to perform their swallowing exercises during radiation. Patients' self-reported ability to eat will be evaluated at the beginning and up to two years after the end of treatment.

Population: Laryngeal and pharyngeal cancer patients (MD Anderson patients only-MD Anderson satellite clinic patients are eligible)
Brief Description: This study will test the effects of a practical psychosocial intervention program on head and neck cancer patients' coping with their side effects from large-field radiation. We will also test to the effect of the program on their compliance with preventive exercises that promote long term swallowing function. Part of the intervention may be delivered off-site via telephone Patients' swallowing ability and function will be evaluated with self-report and radiographic swallowing studies at the beginning and end of the study.
