Brief Description:  The goal of this study is to learn if using a non-invasive therapy called "neurofeedback training" can help teach patients ways to modify their own brain waves to decrease the perception of pain and improve quality of life. 

Tobacco Treatment Program

Population:  Smokers (eligible MDACC cancer patients, MDACC employees, their spouse and dependent children)
Brief Description:  No-cost tobacco cessation and relapse program that includes behavioral counseling and tobacco drugs.

Breast Cancer

Meditation Study

Population:  Female breast cancer and non-cancer patients, 18 years and older
Brief Description: The goal of this study is to test Tibetan meditation as a therapy to teach cancer patients to change their brain functioning and to improve quality of life.  Researchers want to compare the cancer patients' outcome to people who have never had cancer.

MyLifeStylist/The Comprehensive Lifestyle Change in Anti-Cancer Program

Population: Women with Stage III Breast Cancer, 18 years and older
Brief Description: The goal of this behavioral research study is to look at the relationship between lifestyle factors and cancer-related outcomes, such as the risk of the disease coming back, patient quality of life, physical functioning, and bodily reactions (such as hormones and immune function).

Stress Management

Population:  Women with breast cancer undergoing radiation therapy (MDACC patients only)
Brief Description:  The goal of this behavioral research study is to compare two different forms of stress management, that will include stretching and relaxation techniques, in order to learn if and how well they may help to improve physical and emotional well-being.  This will be tested in patients with breast cancer who are receiving radiation therapy.  For comparison purposes, there will also be a group of participants that does not take part in the stress management programs.

The Couples Study

Brief Description:  The goal of this research study is to learn more about the effect of stress, inflammation, cancer-related fatigue, and marriage on breast cancer survivors and their spouses.

Modeling Adherence - Dental and Swallowing Regimens

Population:  For non-surgical laryngeal and pharyngeal cancers (oropharynx, hypopharynx, nasopharynx) cancer patients (MD Anderson patients only- MD Anderson satellite clinic patients are eligible)
Brief Description: Study will follow head and neck cancer patients as they proceed through treatment to determine biological and psychological reasons for difficulties in coping with treatment regimens and track health outcomes in the two years after treatment.
