Skin Cancer

Skin Cancer Basics

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States. More than one million cases are diagnosed each year, and according to current estimates, 40% to 50% of Americans will have skin cancer at least once by the time they are age 65. Basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma (also called nonmelanoma) are the two most common types of skin cancer.

The skin is the body's largest organ. It protects against heat, sunlight, injury, and infection. It has two main layers: the epidermis (upper or outer layer) and the dermis (lower or inner layer). Basal and squamous cell skin cancers occur most often in the epidermis. Basal cells are found in the base of the epidermis, while squamous cells form the surface.

Skin cancer can be deadly, but nearly all skin cancer can be treated if it is detected and diagnosed early.

Surgery is the first step in treating almost all types of skin cancers. Conventional surgery (removing the entire cancerous area at one time) is not often used for basal and squamous cell skin cancers. Many basal and squamous cell skin cancers can be removed from the skin quickly and easily. Learn more.
