The Ovarian Cancer Awareness Quilt Project at M. D. Anderson was established to educate the public about the risk factors and symptoms of ovarian cancer through the artistry of quilting.
The women in M. D. Anderson's Ovarian Cancer Support Group donated the blocks to make the first quilt, which was displayed at the 2002 International Quilt Festival in Houston. Everyone touched by ovarian cancer, from survivors to family members and friends, was welcome to contribute a block. Since then, our project has grown tremendously. Over 100 teal ribbon quilt blocks, some of which have already been made into quilts, have been received.
Quilters from across the state created quilt blocks and entire quilts for the Ovarian Cancer Awareness Quilt Project's first online quilt auction hosted in the spring of 2008. Sixty-eight quilts were auctioned to raise funds for the institution's Blanton-Davis Ovarian Cancer Research Program, which aims to develop effective screening methods and, ultimately, a cure for ovarian cancer through innovative research.
Plans are already underway for the second annual online quilt auction, scheduled for October 2009. On January 18, 2009, participating quilt shop owners and volunteer quilters will gather for a quilt sew-in. Completed quilts from the sew-in will be donated to the Ovarian Cancer Awareness Quilt Project. View photos from the 2008 auction's sew-in.
