The Department of Infectious Diseases, Infection Control and Employee Health provides expert clinical consultations to prevent, diagnose, and treat infections in both adult and pediatric cancer patients.  An unfortunate circumstance of cancer and its treatment is a lowering of the body’s immune system making the patient more susceptible to both common and unique infections. Our multi-faceted Infection Control program provides surveillance and preventative strategies for fungal, viral, and bacterial infections (including multi-drug resistant organisms) particularly in our high-risk patients (leukemia, bone marrow or stem cell transplant).

Department of Infectious Disease PhotoOur clinical services provide access to newer treatment options/protocols for the management of various infections and disease states (neutropenic fever/sepsis), as well as expertise in the standard management of complex infections unique to our patient population.  Our department is also instrumental in developing institution pathways for the management of infections in various treatment settings (hospital, emergency center, outpatient, home therapy), and for making institutional and national guidelines for appropriate antibiotic usage.  Individuals that would like to schedule an appointment with one of our physicians can do so through the self-referral program or by asking your doctor to provide a referral.
