Kimberly Duron
Administrative Assistant
Kimberly Duron loves puzzles. Good thing, too, because as an administrative assistant in the Sarcoma Center, she schedules appointments for dozens of patients every year. “I secure times that work best,” she says. Getting patients, doctors and rooms together at a convenient time sometimes feels like solving a jigsaw puzzle with too many pieces, but Kimberly always manages to make the pieces fit. She says the trick to solving her puzzles is about knowing the right person to call. “It’s not a matter of if I can work patients in — I must get them in … and trust me, I will get them in.”

Celia Garcia
Patient Access Specialist
Garcia is a patient access specialist for the International Cancer Assessment Center. But her job title just skims the surface. “I’m not sure people know all the details that go into our work — getting access for the patient,” Garcia says. She spends a lot of her time organizing, double-checking, coordinating and calling to make sure the needs of both patient and center are met before a patient even sets foot in M. D. Anderson. Because most of Garcia’s patients are from outside the U.S., she partners directly with the International Center. Language Assistance interpreters assist with a multitude of languages, including Farsi, Portuguese, Spanish and Arabic. Garcia works closely with patients to gather necessary documents, including pathology reports, images, medication lists, medical history and insurance information. “A lot of times these things can be hard to track down. It can be frustrating for both parties, but in the end, my goal is to help the patient,” she says. Garcia also networks with clinics and services to determine the best schedule for a patient’s care. She attributes a large part of her success to her diligent, tight-knit team of physicians, nurses and the International Center staff, and the cooperative people she interacts with across the institution. “I’m so impressed by the compassion and patience I witness every day. These people are coming here from around the world. We try our best to make them feel like a part of our family,” she says.
