Cancer in 2009 — What Needs to be Done - An American diagnosed with cancer today is very likely to join the growing ranks of survivors, who are estimated to total 12 million and will reach 18 million by 2020. The "war on cancer" began in 1971 with bipartisan legislation that provided NIH funding for increased research on the cause, prevention and treatment of cancer.
