Resolution Options

Most organizations have only formal (on the record) approaches to dispute resolution. At M. D. Anderson, we provide informal as well as formal approaches to conflict management. This Dispute Resolution Pathways diagram (pdf) shows the different paths employees and trainees might use when they seek resolution to workplace issues or problems.

Informal Approach

The Ombuds Office is an informal, off-the-record resource for addressing issues. It looks at all sides of a situation and seeks win-win solutions. The Ombuds Office is an alternate pathway of communication that supplements, but does not replace, formal communication channels.

Formal Approach

To follow a formal approach, please contact Human Resources, the Office of Trainee and Alumni Affairs, Compliance or speak directly with your supervisor.

Which Approach is Best?

Employees and trainees may take either informal or formal paths when seeking resolution. Employees may visit the Ombuds office to think through their options as to which approach will yield better results.

Many employees ask us, “How do I know whether to visit the Ombuds Office or take my problem to Human Resources?”  The main difference resides in confidentiality and neutrality.

This chart shows the main differences and similarities between the Ombuds Office and other M. D. Anderson resources (pdf).
