Wellness Training Opportunities
These wellness workshops are designed to give you more insight into wellness.
We currently offer several 1- to 3-hour wellness based training courses for you to choose from. Below each workshop description you will find the next available workshop date and time.
Aging Well: The Secrets to Successful Aging and Healthy Life
In 1874 Henry Amiel said, "to know how to grow old is the master-work of wisdom, and one of the most difficult chapters in the great art of living." This workshop will use data from some of the landmark studies on aging (MacArthur Foundation Study of Aging in America and Harvard Study of Human Development) to help participants understand that lifestyle choices, more than genes, determine how well we will age!

Art of Calm
When life becomes intolerably stressful the temptation is often to blame external influences. But it is often we who are responsible for holding ourselves back from getting the most out of life and realizing our full potential. This interactive session will provide tools to help participants build the knowledge and skills necessary to practice the "Art of Being - Calm".

Eating Well While Eating Out
This class will educate participants on healthy restaurant dining. We will look at actual restaurant menus and discuss healthy options. A meal will be displayed and we will weigh and measure the portions. The class will end with a tour of one of the M. D. Anderson dining areas.

Fitting In Fitness
With 1,440 minutes in each day, it shouldn't be that hard to find 30 minutes a day for moderate physical activity, as the Surgeon General has recommended. But finding those 30 minutes a day for physical activity can be very challenging. This class has been designed to help you Fit Fitness into your day successfully.

Get Ready, Get Set: Pre-retirement Planning
Everyone realizes that retirement isn't as easy as waking up and deciding you don't want to go to work one day, but many individuals fail to do any pre-retirement planning. This workshop is being offered by the Employee Health & Well-being and Benefits teams and will help participants set a pre-retirement plan in motion.

Healthy Living: Answering the Wellness Challenge
This workshop will enlighten you about the six dimensions of wellness and their interconnectedness. Participants will have the opportunity to assess their current state of health and well-being, to explore strategies to increase your potential for optimal health and well-being and to sign a behavior change contract around a wellness goal determined in class.
Each participants will receive a copy of "The Mayo Clinic Plan" 10 Essential Steps to a Better Body and Healthier Life" book, which will be used to focus on nutrition and weight management, physical activity and stress management.

Kicking Your Stress Habits
A highly interactive class designed to teach you methods to help handle and cope with your stress in a more positive manner. You will learn relaxation techniques as well as other channels of stress management.

Minutes a Day to a Healthy Back
Back pain is a life-changer. It changes the way we move, the things we can do and the manner in which we do them. Our backs work 24 hours a day and statistics show that 80% of us will suffer from back pain at some time in our lives. Back pain is the second most common reason for visiting a physician. This workshop helps participants better understand back problems and possible solutions to a "healthy" back.

Resiliency: Keeping a Focus on What Keeps us Healthy
This workshop will outline a series of practical strategies and exercises to help manage the challenges of work, personal and family life, especially during periods of rapid change. The focus will be on developing behaviors, habits and attitudes that will enhance personal resiliency, both on and off the job. This is a highly interactive seminar.

Speed Up Your Metabolism
This workshop will help participants gain the knowledge and skills necessary to speed up their metabolism and enhance their opportunity for effective weight loss. Participants will learn about the downside of fad diets and how to avoid the "roller coaster" of dieting.

Supermarket Tours with Your Wellness Dietitian
This workshop will take you on a wellness journey to a local supermarket where you will learn about everything from label reading to food safety. Your tour guide will share tips on healthy food selection, new food products, ingredients and more! An M. D. Anderson shuttle will get you to and from the supermarket.
