About Us

Why should I be involved in commercializing my technology?

The primary reason an employee at MD Anderson should be involved in commercializing their technology is to assist with our mission of Making Cancer History®. While MD Anderson employees create and contribute to cutting edge research on a daily basis, this research typically cannot reach patients without the financial support, and regulatory and marketing expertise of a company. Companies will not license and invest the vast amount of resources necessary to get a therapy to market without the competitive advantage afforded by patent protection.

Participation in the commercialization process also offers potential financial rewards.  If the Office of Technology Commercialization is successful in licensing an invention, the creators receive 50% of any licensing proceeds (after the costs of patenting and licensing are reimbursed) and of the remaining 50%, 15% goes to the creators’ laboratory, 10% goes to their department and 25% is retained by MD Anderson.
