Anderson was accepted into the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality's (TCEQ) Clean Texas Program as a platinum level member. In gaining acceptance into theseis programs, M. D. Anderson had to demonstrate environmental stewardship beyond compliance and set measurable and continual improvement goals.

What is an Environmental Health & Safety Management System (EHSMS)?

An EHSMS is a methodology of managing environmental risks in a systematic, proactive manner. It begins with a commitment from senior and operating management and progresses down a path of discovery, prioritization and risk management. Significant environmental health and safety risks are identified and managed through a process of determining objectives and targets for projects that impact the institution.

Why did we implement an EHSMS?

M. D. Anderson embraced the management system approach because it affords the institution an opportunity to establish a uniform method of managing risks through:

  • Instilling discipline in the quality of customer service we provide
  • Incorporating environmental health and safety awareness into all levels and functions of the institution
  • Identifying cost containment opportunities
  • Demonstrating responsibility to our stakeholders
  • Improving relationships with regulatory agencies

Further, pursuing ISO 14001 registration supports M. D. Anderson’s business strategies by:

  • Handling environmental health and safety matters responsibility
  • Enhancing the institution’s mission by integrating environmental health and safety stewardship into everyone’s daily business activities
  • Avoiding unnecessary environmental health and safety costs and liabilities
  • Adding to M. D. Anderson’s stature as a responsible corporate citizen

What are M. D. Anderson’s outreach efforts for external stakeholders?

M. D. Anderson's outreach initiatives are documented in its annual EPA Performance Track Report.
