Measuring Performance

The Environmental Health & Safety Management System (EHSMS) is a product-driven process within M. D. Anderson.

The EHSMS is managed through the Balanced Scorecard business model. Our EHSMS scorecard is tied to key performance indicators that support the mission of M. D. Anderson. These metrics serve as the basis for determining suitability, adequacy and effectiveness of the EHSMS deliverables (pdf). The Environmental Health & Safety team strives to become the 'Service Provider of Choice' through this process. The objective and target parameters are met when the product is delivered:

Faster

  • Is the EH&S product being delivered on time?
  • Are internal milestones being met through the project management tracking tools?
  • Are customer expectations being exceeded?

Better

  • Has the customer received a quality product?
  • Are Best Management Practices being employed?
  • Is sustainability built into the equation?
  • Are accident rates and environmental incident rates dropping?

Less Costly with Condition Enhancing Outcomes

  • Has the deliverable been produced within budget?
  • Do the customers believe that the EH&S product is value added?
  • Are management tools being used to enhance a clear picture of desired outcome?
  • Are employees actively engaged in professional development?
  • Are customer and producer benefits clearly defined?
  • Are the producers being validated for the products produced?
